"The Garbutt Magpies Cup is an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth AFL and cultural event held in Gurambilbarra (Townsville), bringing together primary and secondary school students from across North Queensland. The community-led initiative promotes cultural pride, school engagement, health and wellbeing, and positive community connections through AFL, cultural activities, and engagement with Elders in a culturally safe and inclusive environment.
Established in 2014, the Cup brings together Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, families, schools, Elders and community partners to celebrate culture, connection and achievement. The program begins with Elders visiting schools to share cultural knowledge, history and storytelling in meaningful and age-appropriate ways, strengthening intergenerational connection and cultural pride. The journey culminates in a regional AFL carnival that promotes teamwork, inclusion and community spirit, before concluding with presentations recognising participation, teamwork, sportsmanship and community spirit.
Held in alignment with National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children's Day, the Garbutt Magpies Cup recognises the importance of children as the heart of culture and community. It supports young people to build confidence, strengthen identity and engage positively with their community, helping to grow the next generation of strong, confident leaders."
