A Place for Culture

Culturally Responsive Learning and Development for Early Childhood Education and Care Staff

A Place for Culture is a professional learning and development opportunity that supports Early Childhood Education and Care educators, leaders and service providers working in non-Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander services to build inclusive early learning environments for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and families.

Delivered by SNAICC – National Voice for our Children, the A Place for Culture learning and development opportunity supports educators and leaders in building culturally responsive and inclusive early childhood education and care spaces where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and families feel valued and where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures are celebrated and woven with respect into everyday practice.

What opportunities does A Place for Culture offer?

A Place for Culture provides opportunities to:

  • deepen your understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, cultures and ways of knowing, being and doing, and how these shape children, families and communities today,
  • grow your awareness of why a strong cultural identity is a protective factor for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children,
  • connect your learning to the Early Years Learning Framework V2.0 and the National Quality Standard, exploring how culturally responsive practice builds a strong foundation for belonging, being and becoming,
  • build knowledge, confidence and capability to develop strong, respectful and reciprocal relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, families and communities, and
  • create welcoming, culturally rich learning environments where all children learn and engage with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and histories.

Through A Place for Culture, educators and leaders build the knowledge, confidence and practical strategies needed to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children to strengthen cultural identity and walk strong in culture.

Program Structure

A Place for Culture is delivered through a blended learning model, including:

  1. Self-paced online learning; approximately 6–8 hours.
  2. One-day, in-person workshop facilitated by SNAICC.
  3. Online yarning circle to reflect and share learning with peers.
  4. Certificate of participation on completion.

This approach allows participants to build knowledge at their own pace and then apply learning in a supportive, interactive environment.

Program Access and Timing

After your enrolment is confirmed with SNAICC:

  • You will receive an email from SNAICC with details of your in-person workshop.
  • You will recieve a request to complete a short self-assessment survey via Google Forms (this will take less than 5-10 minutes).
  • Approximately eight weeks before the workshop, Early Childhood Australia (ECA) will provide login details to access the online learning.
  • Finally, you will have access to online learning for up to eight weeks before the workshop and for four weeks after.

Learning Components

The online component of A Place for Culture has been developed in partnership with Early Childhood Australia (ECA) and is delivered through the ECA Learning Hub, a Moodle-based Learning Management System.

The online learning consists of two programs designed to strengthen knowledge and reflection ahead of the in-person workshop.

Program 1: A Place for Culture (Four courses | Estimated 3–4 hours total)

  1. Understanding culture
  2. Cultural ways of knowing, being and doing
  3. Cultural strengths
  4. Working together

Program 2: A Place for Culture in the Early Years (Two courses | Estimated 1–2 hours total)

  1. Living cultures
  2. Cultural journey

The online learning is self-paced and can be paused and resumed as needed. Each individual online course takes approximately one hour, though this will vary between individuals. We recommend allowing up to six hours to complete all online courses. Access to the online learning is provided by ECA up to eight weeks before the in-person workshop, allowing plenty of time to complete the learning at your own pace.

Please note: For this partnership, SNAICC led the development of the learning content of A Place for Culture with Early Childhood Australia supporting the Learning Management System development and functionality.

A Place for Culture in-person workshops will be delivered in locations across Australia throughout 2026.

The in-person workshop builds on the online learning and is designed to:

  • deepen your understanding of the content,
  • explore how to apply your learning in practice and within your community,
  • share learning and practical ideas with other Early Childhood Education and Care staff to build your confidence, and
  • explore steps to strengthen cultural responsiveness.

Workshop Details

  • Time: 9:30 am – 3:30 pm.
  • Catering: Morning tea and lunch are provided.
  • Attendance: Full-day attendance is required.

Workshop Attendance and Location Changes

Participants are expected to enrol in an in-person workshop, complete the online learning before attending and be present for the full workshop day.

Places in A Place for Culture are limited and, due to funding, workshops are being delivered in major metropolitan locations across Australia throughout 2026.

Please note: If you are unable to attend the in-person workshop please contact SNAICC immediately on training@snaicc.org.au, SNAICC is generally unable to offer an alternative place due to limited funding and locations.

Following the in-person workshop, participants are invited to join a one-hour online yarning circle via Microsoft Teams.

The yarning circle provides an opportunity to:

  • connect with other Early Childhood Care and Education staff,
  • reflect on your learning,
  • share experiences and ideas, and
  • discuss practical actions to support culturally responsive practice.

Details on how to join the yarning circle will be provided during your enrolment in A Place for Culture.
