Yappera Children’s Service
How amazing are the mob at Yappera in Narrm?!
Based on Wurundjeri-willam Country in Thornbury, Yappera Children’s Service delivers high-quality, culturally grounded health and education programs to Aboriginal children.
As a not-for-profit Aboriginal community-controlled organisation, Yappera offers a range of programs and education services, alongside health and wellbeing supports for children and families.
Yappera—meaning Belonging Place—is a gathering, learning, and wellbeing space for Aboriginal children, their parents, carers, families, and community in Narrm/Melbourne.
Guided by a strong cultural framework, Yappera provides holistic early childhood education and care that integrates health, wellbeing, and family support. Services include daycare, kindergarten, specialist health programs, and cultural workshops.
Yappera’s programs empower children to grow strong in their identity, supporting each child’s individual needs while celebrating Koori values and community connections. Every child benefits from a personalised cultural education plan, helping them thrive in a culturally safe and responsive environment. Families are active participants in their child’s journey, with their voices respected and embraced within the centre’s life.
The board proudly consists of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community members who bring lived experience and diverse expertise. Many directors have deep, intergenerational ties to Yappera, with leadership that reflects the community’s strength, knowledge, and commitment to self-determination. Staff are highly valued, supported through professional development, wellness initiatives, and cultural training.
Yappera’s philosophy is that every Aboriginal child has the right and opportunity to reach their full potential through high-quality care in a cultural setting that builds identity, resilience, health, and wellbeing.
