The Secretariat of National Aboriginal and Islander Child Care (SNAICC) has published a submission to the Australian Human Rights Commission National Children’s Commissioner’s examination of intentional self-harm and suicidal behaviour in children. The submission examines the devastating rates of self-harm and suicide for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people. The suicide rates for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander females aged 15–19 years is 5.9 times higher than other young people in the same age group, while for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander males the corresponding rate ratio was 4.4 times higher.
