The UNPFII is made up of 16 members acting in an individual capacity as independent experts on indigenous issues. SNAICC is participating in this session seeking to raise the visibility of critical human rights issues impacting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and to build partnerships to strengthen collective work for outcomes for Indigenous children around the world.
SNAICC is working as part of the Indigenous Peoples Organisations Network of Australia (IPO), which has made a series of statements to the Permanent Forum, as attached below.
As part of this effort, SNAICC is working with the Indigenous Sub Group of the NGO Group for the Convention on the Rights of the Child to host a side event on strengthening international and national advocacy for Indigenous children’s rights. Download the flyer here.
This event was held from 1:15 – 2:30 on 9 May 2012, proving to be a participatory engaging space in which advocates from different countries shared their struggles and strategies to redress human rights violations against Indigenous children within their context. UNICEF also shared its recent research on Indigenous youth suicide, which focused on a number of Latin American countries. Full report coming soon!
