Promising Practices – Book 4 Indigenous responses to child protection issues
Services providing culturally relevant child protection support for families involved in the child protection system bring an Indigenous perspective to child protection issues. They draw on the strengths of the communities and extended families of the children who are placed in out-of-home care.
By working with existing frameworks of care within Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander kinship networks and communities and by taking a holistic approach to meeting the needs of children in care, they can make it more likely that children remain connected with their families, communities and culture when they are removed from their parents’ care.
