Prof. Michael Chandler
Canadian Professor Emeritus Michael Chandler delivered a presentation on his ongoing research that examines the role cultural continuity plays in reducing suicide youth risk (amongst a host of other negative outcomes) in Indigenous communities.
Family Matters Panel Discussion
An expert panel was assembled for a forum focused on the Family Matters – Kids safe in culture, not in care initiative, which explores measures to curb the tide of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children removed from their homes and cultures.
Channel 10 presenter Narelda Jacobs facilitated the expert panel, which included:

- Kay Benham, WA Department for Child Protection and Family Support
- Dr Cindy Blackstock, First Nations Child and Family Caring Society of Canada
- Judge Matthew Myers, Federal Circuit Court of Australia
The panel explored strategies for a change agenda to combat the unacceptable levels of child removal across the country.
Prof. Fiona Stanley
Professor Fiona Stanley, Founding Director and Patron of the Telethon Kids Institute, shared her research on intergenerational trauma, and the ability of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander controlled early childhood services to overcome this trauma.
June Oscar AO
June Oscar, CEO of Marninwarntikura Fitzroy Women’s Resource Centre, shared her research and experience on community-led development, and the renowned Liliwan study, which recorded the prevalence of Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder.
The Decade Ahead
A closing plenary panel presentation provided a space for us to look to the future, with panel members and attendees exploring how communities are dealing with the issues our children face, and the solutions we have to address these issues.
