Little Fellas Family Fun Day was a collaborative effort, instigated by Emma Thomas of the Closing the Gap funded Building Strong Aboriginal Youth Project. Community workers across three local government areas came together under Southern VACCA’s coordination to create this reconciliative event.
The event was to engage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families in conversation about early childhood. Services providing an activity on the day had to ensure that it was culturally relevant and created an opportunity for children and parents to learn about early childhood development.
Guidelines to stakeholders were very clear about avoiding paper or just promoting a single organisation. Activities were provided for all ages and the resulting event was a truly collaborative affair with culture at its heart. The day cumulated in a traditionally dressed game of Marngrook. Everything stopped and all went to watch.
This report details how the day was run and some tools we used to create it. It was difficult to express the efforts the collaborators went to and the spirit in which the day unfolded. This report is for all the wonderful volunteers, collaborators and families who enjoyed a wonderful big family day out.
