Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) released Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander wellbeing: A focus on children and youth, April 2011, a compendium of statistics covering culture, leisure and heritage; housing and community facilities; law and justice; and a population overview.
The statistics are taken from a 2008 ABS survey that covered 13,000 Indigenous people. One of the main conclusions to be drawn from these statistics is that young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living in remote areas who speak an Indigenous language are ‘less likely to experience risk factors associated with poor wellbeing’ such as drug and alcohol abuse.
